Camera Shy? Let’s Make Magic Anyway – How to Feel Fabulous in Front of the Lens!

Let’s be real—getting in front of a camera can feel a bit like baring your soul.

A mature woman with short red hair, wearing a cream lace dress, leans forward on a white cushioned surface, smiling confidently at the camera against a plain white background.

Whether you’re considering a stunning boudoir session, a windswept beach shoot, a timeless beauty portrait, or you’re stepping into the spotlight for my empowering 50 Over 50 project—if you're camera-shy, the idea alone might send you into hiding behind the nearest sofa.

But here’s the truth: you can look and feel incredible in your photos, even if your usual reaction to a camera is to duck and run!

With the right approach, a good dose of preparation, and a photographer who genuinely understands your nerves(That’d be me!), we can create images that are not only beautiful, but beautifully you.

How we’ll make that happen? Read on!

1. Let’s Make Sure We’re a Good Match, Professionally

You wouldn’t go on a weekend away with someone you don’t click with, and the same goes for your photographer.

Comfort and trust are everything.

I’ve worked with plenty of women who started their session nervous, and by the end, they were beaming (and sometimes asking if we could do it all again next week!). That transformation only happens when we connect and you feel safe, seen, and supported.

So, let’s have a proper chat before we commit to anything. A little coffee at my studio, or on Zoom, can go a long way.

2. Tell Me What You Really Want (and What You Don’t)

Open communication is gold. Tell me what kind of imagery lights you up.

Show me what makes you feel empowered, elegant, bold, or whatever flavour of fabulous you’re after.

And just as importantly? Tell me what makes you cringe.!

If there are poses, angles, or ideas that just don’t feel “you,” I want to know.

The more I understand your vision and your boundaries, the better I can tailor the shoot to fit you like your favourite pair of jeans.

3. Planning Is Our Secret Weapon

Winging it? No. Not ever!

Before shoot day, we’ll dig into all the details: what to wear, how you want to look and feel, the setting (soft sand or studio chic?), and the overall vibe of your session.

This preparation isn’t just about logistics.

It’s about building your confidence so that when you step in front of the camera, you feel prepared, powerful, and yes, excited.

4. You’ve Got Strengths, Beautiful:Let’s Show Them Off!

This is your permission slip to love on yourself a little.

What do you adore about your face, your body, your story, your spirit?

Let’s highlight that!

Whether it’s the confident smile you’ve worked hard to own, the curves you’ve come to embrace, or the wisdom etched into your expression; we’ll lean into your strengths and celebrate what makes you… you.

And remember: the best portraits are never about perfection.

They’re about presence. Your authenticity is your superpower.

5. I’ll Guide You Every Step of the Way

This isn’t one of those “smile and hope for the best” situations.

I’ll guide your poses, adjust your angles, and make sure you’re never left wondering what to do with your hands. (They get weird, don’t they?)

We’ll try a few things, have a laugh, maybe shake it out if we need to loosen up.

And yes, I’ll gently suggest what works best for your face, body, because you’re working with me for my skills, as well as my encouragement.

Trust me, I’ve got you.

One Last (Important) Thing:

You’re Already Enough. More Than Enough.

You don’t need to lose ten pounds, or morph into someone else.

Your portrait session isn’t about becoming someone different: it’s about revealing the incredible woman you already are.

Whether we’re capturing soft beauty, raw vulnerability, strength, sass, serenity or sparkle; it’s all you.

Your story, your energy, your moment.

You’ve got this. And I’ve got you!
