How I Found My Way Behind the Lens

I didn’t grow up with a camera in my hand! In fact, photography wasn’t something I ever imagined pursuing.

What I did love, though, was watching my cousin work with his “proper” film cameras. He was a talented photographer who introduced me to the magic of developing film, and seeing those first images appear in the darkroom was fascinating, even if I didn’t realise at the time how much it would influence my future.

I went to university with plans to become a languages teacher, but teaching never felt like my true calling. Instead, I spent several years working in a mix of technical, administrative, and customer service roles and learning how to communicate, stay organised, and build strong relationships with people from all walks of life.

Then, in 2002, a series of unexpected events changed everything. Almost by accident, I enrolled in a City & Guilds Photography Course, thinking it might simply be a creative outlet. It turned out to be the turning point of my career - and life!

Through that course, I learned to truly see light and shadow, to understand how cameras worked, and to appreciate the beautiful balance between technical skill and artistic expression. By the time I completed my qualification, with flying colours, I was completely in love with photography.

In 2003, I took a leap of faith and started my own photography business, and I’ve never looked back!
