Three Months On: The Reality of Recovery and Finding My Way Back

Has it really been 3 months since I was admitted to hospital?

Time behaves differently when you are unwell and, to be honest, bed-bound, with little else to think about but getting better.

I won’t sugar-coat it: it was genuinely awful, in every possible way; and this coming from someone like me, who always tries to find something positive in any situation.

Perhaps the memories are still too fresh, the experience still too close, for me to be able to look back and see it any differently just yet.

But… I am now back home.

I’m slowly getting back on my feet, but still very unsteady, and recovery from this disease is both slow and unpredictable, so I continue to persevere, one step at a time.

I will need ongoing community physiotherapy, and realistically it may take many more months before I’m anywhere near as mobile as I was prior to the illness; if I ever get full mobility back!

Progress can feel frustratingly gradual, but it is progress nonetheless, and I am holding onto that.

The plan is to return to work by mid to late June, and I am looking forward to booking my 50 Over 50 portrait sessions within that period, which feels incredibly encouraging.

Having something creative and purposeful ahead feels like an important part of moving forward and healing!

I’ve also put together a short video slideshow showing the timeline from hospital admission through to being back home. It offers a small window into what the past few months have looked like, and how far things have come.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me, reached out, helped practically, or simply kept me in their thoughts.

Your kindness and generosity have not only been appreciated: they have been genuinely healing.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have such thoughtful people around me as I continue to recover.

There is still some way to go, but I am moving in the right direction!
